Pottery Catalogue: Lighting Setup for Glazed Ceramic Surfaces
Glazed ceramics reflect light like resin but with organic curves. Master the lighting triangle for pottery, from matte terracotta to glossy raku, and create a catalogue that shows true glaze depth.
The Pottery Photography Challenge: Curves and Glaze
Pottery presents a unique photography challenge: the curved, three-dimensional form of a bowl or vase reflects light from multiple angles simultaneously. A glossy celadon glaze will show reflections from your ceiling, window, and hands all at once if you don't control the lighting environment.
Matte and bisque-fired pieces have the opposite problem — they can appear flat and chalky under insufficient light.
The Three-Light Triangle for Pottery Photography
Key Light (Primary) A large softbox or diffused window at 45° to one side of the piece. This is your main light source, responsible for showing the glaze colour and surface texture accurately.
Fill Light (Secondary — Optional) A silver or white reflector card placed on the opposite side of the key light at 1.5× the key light distance. This lifts the shadow side without creating a second specular highlight.
Rim Light / Back Light A small LED panel placed behind and slightly to one side of the piece. This creates a subtle glow around the rim of bowls and the lip of vases, separating the ceramic from its background and adding visual depth.
Special Considerations by Glaze Type
| Glaze Type | Lighting Approach | |-----------|-------------------| | Glossy / High-Fire | Diffused box lighting; avoid direct spots | | Matte / Satin | Slightly more direct side light to reveal surface texture | | Raku / Carbon Trapping | Dark background, rim light only — lets the metallic shimmer be the star | | Terracotta / Unglazed | Natural outdoor shade; warm morning light reveals clay texture |

Always request a digital press proof before authorizing full-volume offset print runs. This lets you inspect binding trims, staple creep, and CMYK color densities on your actual paper stock.
